Engine Painting

While Sasha worked in the engine room for a few days I worked on the engine.  I was charged with scraping, sanding, degreasing, and masking the engine (while learning all the parts) so that Sasha and I could apply a few coats of paint.  The goal was to paint while we were off our boat and working to hand Soterion over to the new crew.  Somehow it all worked out.   This is our sad looking engine all scraped and degreased -- ready for paint.

Why are we going to all this trouble with the engine?  What we have is a genuine early eighty's vintage Perkins 4.236.  The whole engine was rebuilt in 2010 and is still in good shape today.  One way to keep an engine in good shape is to scrape off the rust every so often.  Another way to keep an engine in good working order is to paint it white.  White will show the first sign of a drip or stray of engine fluid.  As long as you keep it well wiped down it should be pretty easy to keep tabs.

On it's way to becoming white.  We spray primed the entire engine with matte grey - actually really like the color!
